Since World cup 2019, many rumor have been spreading that Virat and Rohit are having hard time bonding with each other and they are having difference. As a Die-Heart Indian fans it was very difficult to accept the fact that two of your favorite players do not have good relations or not as good as it was before. All these rumors were cleared when Rohit and Virat were seen having fun and cracking jokes on the field. Reports are coming that Virat is going to hand over T20I captaincy to Rohit, if this happens it is an epitome of brotherhood.
Kohli has so far led India in 95 ODIs, and with 65 wins along with 27 losses has a winning percentage of 70.43. In 45 T20Is, India have won 27 matches while losing 14 of them. On the other hand, Rohit has led India 10 times in ODIs and led them to victories on eight occasions while losing twice. In T20Is, he has captained in 19 matches of which they have won 15 and lost 4. “Virat himself made the announcement. He thinks that he needs to concentrate on his batting and go back to becoming what he’s always been — the best batsman in the world,” as saying T20 world cup will be his last tournament as a T20 captain.
Lately, it has been difficult for Virat to come back in form and also one of the criticisms of Kohli’s captaincy is his failure to win a major ICC trophy since taking over the charge of the team from MSD. A team that won three ICC titles across six years from 2007 to 2013, there has been barrenness in the trophy cabinet. Now, trophies alone aren’t a base to judge how good a team is performing, and silverware is what separates good teams from the great. Under Virat Kohli, India have been a sound in limited over force, but the continuing trend of near-finishes and knockout-game-stumbles have, time and again, raised questions on the leadership and management of the team.
Recently, in the month of June, India lost in the final of the World Test Championship as well which further fueled the questions. Kohli, Rohit and India team management have had meetings within the past few months over the change of guard, at least in white-ball cricket. Also, Rohit has been very successful as captain in T20 cricket, especially in IPl. When he captains Mumbai Indians which, should not be forgotten, is a great set-up in itself, most tactical moves end up becoming masterful and match-winning decisions, and the calculated manner in which he uses his resources, combined with his overall record in knockout games, really makes you want to see a bit of the same (or more) in international cricket. Having said that, Virat’s performance has been good but we are missing the 2015’s Virat when was invincible. Heading towards the T20 world, India would want their MVPs to be in a great head space. As fans of Indian cricket, we accept all decisions and wish the team all the best for the T20 world, fingers crossed.
