THE GREATEST RIVALRY IN F1

Updated: Nov 20, 2021

Formula One (also known as Formula 1 or F1) is the highest class of international auto racing for single-seater formula racing cars sanctioned by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA). The World Drivers' Championship, which became the FIA Formula One World Championship in 1981, has been one of the premier forms of racing around the world since its inaugural season in 1950. The word formula in the name refers to the set of rules to which all participants' cars must conform. A Formula One season consists of a series of races, known as Grands Prix, which take place worldwide on both purpose-built circuits and closed public roads. The results of each race are evaluated using a points system to determine two annual World Championships.

Every generation of racing is built on rivalries: Hunt vs. Lauda. Prost vs. Senna. Schumacher vs. Everybody. Hamilton vs. Verstappen is just getting started. Formula One has the championship fight it has long craved but at the Italian Grand Prix Lewis Hamilton’s and Max Verstappen’s rivalry became physical and worse still, potentially fatal. Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton cruised to a record-tying seventh F1 title last season finishing with an impressive 11 wins and 347 points. Teammate Valtteri Bottas was a distant second with 223 points followed by Red Bull’s Max Verstappen in third with 214 points.

But, this season has not been that easy for Hamilton as Verstappen has given Hamilton a formidable challenge atop of the standings with only six points separating them at the break. The pair finished 1-2 through the first four races with Hamilton winning in Bahrain, Portugal and Spain while Verstappen took the victory at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix in Italy. The 23-year-old Verstappen took charge with a streak of three consecutive wins at the prestigious Monaco Grand Prix and back-to-back races in Austria to overtake Hamilton for No. 1.

Early in the season Hamilton and Verstappen had briefly touched several times, with both to an extent giving way to avoid a major incident. Now the tension is ratcheting up with only five points between them, their clash at the British GP still fresh in the memory, and that spirit of rapprochement is rapidly disappearing. Neither is willing to cede position or show weakness that might be exploited.

At Monza the resulting clash had an almost inevitable air. The cool part is that you don’t know who is going to win the next race or win the championship. That’s why we are all going to be glued to our televisions. It is going to be so intense, especially after what happened at Silverstone. The intensity is ramped up. On the incident at Silverstone, the whole lap they were going to the absolute limit. It is so important to come out of the first lap first and you can really solidify your win. It will go down as one of the greats because Lewis is the best of all time and Max is the star of the next generation.
